Great comedy you can watch now (for free)

There is some great comedy out there.

Are you like me and so tight fisted you don’t want to pay, I’ve a treat in store for you.

Here are three comedy series that you can watch now for free.

Great comedy connoisseur

Now I consider myself to have a good sense of humour, at least according to my many, many, many, many dating profiles.

Why would I lie?

What I’ll do for you is give you a few recommendations for some great comedy that you can watch for free on YouTube.

My sense of humour skews towards the surreal and the silly. You’ve probably already heard of Police Squad, but you may have forgotten about the others on this list.

The best thing about this list?

All the shows only lasted one season, whether it was down to ratings or other factors it keeps it short and sweet.

Police Squad

This is dad jokes the show. There is something pleasurable in watching predictable jokes unfold. This show has jokes flying at you every other second. If one of them doesn’t land, then it’s onto the next one.

There are all kinds of jokes on this show. You have visual comedy, puns, slapstick surrealist humour. There is such a feeling that they threw everything at the wall to what would stick. I don’t know about you but for me, more sticks than slips.

It also gave us the greatest line in comedy history (according to this Youtube channel)

Each show has the exact same formula.

The crime is committed, Det. Drebin is put on the case. Drebin questions suspect, goes to the lab. He then goes to this informant, works out who is involved. It all ends in a shootout followed by a wrap up at the police station.

All six episodes follow this formula.

Would have it got tiring if the show was allowed more episodes?

Thankfully, we’ll never know.

Clone High

This is from the minds behind Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street and The Lego Movie: Phil Lord and Chris Miller. This first aired on MTV.

It was probably too odd for the hip and cool audience of a tv station that was moving away from showing music videos.

It centres around teenage clones of historical figures who attend the same high school. If it sounds silly it’s because it is, it’s ridiculous. If the premise doesn’t appeal to you, then you won’t like the 13 episode series.

It’s a parody of teen drama tropes that were riding high when the show first aired. The characters are engaging and go through enough changes to keep you wanting to know what happens next.

There’s an anarchic sardonic wit that runs through each episode.

Give it a chance you might like it. Don’t judge a comedy by it’s first episode.

I would say turn your brain off, but every so often they slip in some clever references.

Oh, and it has Marylin Manson singing a song about the food pyramid for some reason.

The Armando Iannucci Shows

I loved this show when I was a teenager. It was one of those channel 4 shows that was on late night.

I don’t think too many people watched.

It’s a surreal sketch show that is organised around a concept like boredom.

It’s not as dark or as dreamlike as Chris Morris’ show Jam. Jam features one of my all-time favourite sketches. The sketch wherein the doctor moonlights as a sex line operator:

Armando Iannucci is as close as we’ll get to a UK Larry David. He is behind some of the best in British comedy, from Alan Partridge to The Thick Of It.

I love Iannucci’s surrealist style that is on display in this eight-run series. Maybe when he wraps up Veep, he’ll do something a bit more off the wall.

A man can dream.

Due to the weirdness of this show, I can understand if you hate this.

My bet would be watch the following compilation of Hugh from the show. If you laugh at any point, then you will like the rest of the series.

Did you laugh?

Here’s the series, hope you enjoy.
