Grateful for 2018: a short list

Despite everything that has happened this year I’m still grateful.

You know how when it gets to the end of the year, and you do that looking back?

If you’re like me, there are a few factors that are going to crop up each time. Here are your two main thoughts that come to you:

1: I could have done more.

2: Next year will be different.

Everyone thinks this. You have this ability to look back over the year. Compartmentalise the past 365 days into lists and breakdowns and all that.

No matter what happened to you this year understand that you are not dead, yet.

Each day, each week, each month is another chance to turn it around.

That’s what I have to keep in mind.

Even though I didn’t achieve as much as I wanted to this year I’m grateful for all that happened.

As you sit there reading this understand that you have so much to be grateful for.

I’m going to share what I’m grateful for. I hope that you will spend time considering what you are thankful for. Being grateful is an excellent way to bring your life into perspective. It’s easy to get drawn into the petty dramas of everyday life. Whether that is through interpersonal squabbles. It could be the trouble and strife spread by the outrage industrial complex.

Did you know that only 9% of the world population live in extreme poverty? At the rate that it is going, it looks like extreme poverty will be eradicated by 2030.

What does that mean?

It means that you don’t need to worry about physical needs.

In the coming years, you will need to focus on your inner life.

The prevalence of technology is allowing us to forget ourselves.

How do you remind yourself?

By being grateful, by practising gratitude.

Here are some of the things that I have been grateful for in 2018. This is not an extensive list. This is just to give you an idea of some of the things that you can be thankful.

Friends and family

I am grateful for my family. Over the years the patience and love that they have shown me has only increased. No matter how many times I have messed up, they are there for me. I’m trying to do better, and I hope that on some level that they notice that

I am grateful for Alex. He is my best friend and creative partner. I am fortunate to have him in my life. I’m looking forward to working with him on new projects in 2019.

I am grateful for Saba. This year I was fortunate enough to meet Saba. This is the first time that I have been with someone that I have felt listened to. She also did not punish me for honesty. I have been able to be more honest with her than I have been with others.

I am grateful for my school friends. Even though I have not seen them as much as I wanted I am thankful that they have kept me involved in conversations

Professional

I am grateful for my job. My job does not pay as much as I like. What job does? I am glad to have it. It’s an enjoyable job. Even though the multiplex might be on the way out. The future of the Odyssey complex is on shaky ground I am glad that I am employed.

I am grateful for my work colleagues. It is fortunate that I get to work with a great bunch of coworkers. They make coming into work all the more enjoyable.

I am grateful for Fiverr. You and I are living in a time when it is possible to make money just through your phone. It is thanks to services like Fiverr that help me to make some extra cash on the side. All while doing something that is more relevant to my hopeful career.

Negative aspects

I am grateful for my bad back. My bad back has played up a couple of times this year. It makes me thankful because there are times when I take my mobility for granted. My back reminds me not to.

I am grateful for my mistakes. Mistakes are a learning experience. Without them, I would not grow.

Body

I am grateful for my strength. Although I am not the strongest what power I have has come in handy. I need to maintain what I have and build on it as I get older.

I am grateful for my health. Again I am not in the best health, but I am in much better health than those around me. I need to continue to optimise my health and watch what I eat.

I am grateful for my height. When I was younger, it used to bug me when people commented on my height. Now I take it to be male code for being hot. High shelves? Not a problem for this guy.

Technology

I am grateful for the internet. Think of how lucky you and I are to live in the time that we do now. Any information that you need is instantly accessible. If you want to learn anything at all, nothing is stopping you.

I am grateful for speed adjusters. Youtube and Audible are made much better by being able to speed things up.

Mind

I am grateful for my creativity. You might think that you get all the best ideas when you are young. It seems to be that ideas are like a big dam filled with wine. They just get more and more and improve with age. I like how my thoughts work and hope that I don’t lose that ability.

I am grateful for meditation. Meditation has helped a great deal in improving my focus. It’s good that I am able to take time out of my day to devote towards the practice.

Finally, I am grateful to you for taking the time to read my blog. There is a lot of content out there and it means so much that you are taking the time to consume mine. I hope to continue to improve. I hope to keep you coming back, and I hope to see you here again in 2019.
