Space Janitor (172) looked at Digger. Digger looked at him. The two had been through a lot in a short space of time. Space Janitor hoped the dog saw that there was more value in his life than just digging. At the same time, Space Janitor understood that Digger loved digging. There was little he could do to change the dog’s mind. In any case, why would Space Janitor want to change Digger’s mind?
Space Janitor approached Digger. The other dogs that were present, while they didn’t understand what was going on there was a respect. Even Denabol who had become impatient was not rushing things along. Space Janitor could feel Shep watching from the back too. Was there something Space Janitor should have been doing?
“You are going to keep on digging?” Space Janitor asked. He already knew the answer.
“Digging is what I do best, it’s what I’m good at,” Digger said, looking down at the ground.
“There could be other things you’re good at,” Space Janitor offered.
“Maybe, but I don’t want to know. Digging is what brings me peace. Don’t know how else you want to put it,” Digger said. There was something that he wanted to say, but he held back. It saddened Space Janitor.
“You know if you change your mind, you can always come and work with me,” Space Janitor said.
“I don’t know if I can change my mind,” Digger said.
“Maybe not. But if you do all you got to do is dig up,”
“You can only dig down,” Digger said.
“I know I was joking,” Space Janitor said.
“Oh, you need to work on your delivery,” Digger said.
“Thanks,” Space Janitor said. Neither said anything. Space Janitor felt the eyes of those around him. “I guess this is goodbye then?”
