Stand up guys

Recently in my job I managed to organise a night of stand up to go before a screening of Joker. I wrote this post Stand Up Guys to introduce the acts to the Belfast audience.

The night was a great success. The bosses are hoping to do something similar again. There are a few things that I would do differently but overall I’m really happy with how things went.

I’m posting this here for posterity. Also I’m aware I haven’t posted anything in a while.

Hope you enjoy and if you get a chance to see any of these stand up guys perform, take it.

Stand up guys

Are you ready to laugh?

Have you bought your tickets for Odyssey Cinemas Stand Up Spectacular: Jokes on Us.

Let me introduce myself. I’m Kieran Majury, one of the duty managers at Odyssey Cinemas and a part-time stand-up. What do I mean by part-time? Well, the other time I’m either sitting or sleeping… scratch that from the act.

Joker gets released Friday 4th October. It felt the perfect time for me to introduce you to some of the finest Northern Irish based comedians.

You might not have been aware of them before, but you won’t forget them anytime soon.

These are people who I think will really help get you in the mood for the film.

Without further ado, here are the acts.

George Firehorse –

George Firehorse

Did you know George is Northern Ireland’s best children’s entertainer? Don’t let that fool you, George is suitable for all ages. If anything, he can bring out the inner child in all of us. Using a mixture of magic, mayhem and merriment George will bring your low mood into hysterics. Don’t underestimate him as a one-man show either. Helpers such as the Monkey of Truth or a rodent that does impressions will aid the performance. George is a one-man variety act rolled into one.

Jordan Robinson –

Jordan Robinson

An up and comer in the Belfast comedy scene he has been building a name for himself. I shared a bill with him one time, and to be honest, he blew everyone else out of the water. He has risen up through the ranks very quickly and is one to watch. His comedy is a mixture of a slice of life with a darker edge.

Marcus Keeley –

Marcus Keeley

Did you know that Marcus is one of Northern Ireland’s top poets? Well he is, he rose to the top of the field. It got to the point where he would enter competitions anonymously and he still one. The man could do no wrong until… He started to make his poems funny, sacrilege, sac re bleu. Sack the whole lot of them is what he did and began doing stand up. His comedy is a combination of observation, biography and shaggy dog stories. He taught me the most valuable lesson in stand up: Silence is golden.

Adam Laughlin –

Adam Laughlin

This man is a powder keg of energy and unpredictability. He is a stand up in the purest form. He is boundless enthusiasm. His onstage persona lives on a diet of laughter, and I have never seen the man go hungry. When I first saw him perform, it was a revelation. Adam incorporates physicality, voices and music (his reading of Sean Paul’s opus “Like Glue” is a joy to behold). On a rare occasion, puppets. Adam was born to make people laugh. Sure it’s in his name.

Frazer Robb –

Frazer Robb

Mr Robb has been a father figure to me in comedy. He showed me the ropes when I joined the improv group, Wonderfrog (performing at the Black Box Belfast October 23rd). He was always on hand to give me guidance during my time with the group. Frazer trained at Second City in Chicago. Not only does he know his onions, he remembers where he put them in a scene. He has brought the spirit of improv to his stand up, evolving from a set routine to something more free form. Frazer is fearless stand-up, and I can’t wait for you to see him.

Those are your acts. Friday will be a fantastic night. There’s the film after aswell, right? Does Odyssey Cinemas know how to put on a show or what?

Hope to see you there.

Unless the Joker kidnaps and replaces me at the last minute but then that’ll never happen…right?

Kieran
